Dealing with Computer Viruses

All computers running any variant of Windows are susceptible to "viruses": computer software written to alter the way a computer operates without the permission or knowledge of the user.

More broadly, viruses are "malware": software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system. Types of malware include spyware, adware, Trojan horses, Worms, and viruses.

Malware is very pervasive: If you have a PC with Windows and use the Internet, antivirus software is essential to prevent infection. At present, there are no viruses for the Macintosh^*.

Many antivirus programs exist to protect against malware, and such programs are often included with a new computer. NOD32 & AVG are popular and effective choices.

If you have received notification from us that your machine is infected, please use antivirus software (we recommend NOD32, listed above) to repair the infection. If you are not able to promptly fix the problem, we may need to temporarily block your Internet service, to prevent your machine from sending spam and viruses to other computers.
