Frequently Asked Questions, SquirrelMail edition
There is complete documentation built-into our webmail interface, but here are the most common questions you are likely to ask:
How do I setup a vacation message?
- Click the Filters link at the top of the page.
- Click the "Add a New Rule" button.
- Click in the left-most pull down menu under condition. It says "Header"- change this to "All".
- In the Action box below, click the button for Vacation.
- You will see you email address listed. Make sure this is the actual address you receive email from. Correct it if not. If this mailbox receives mail from multiple email addresses, you must list each one, separated by a comma (and no spaces)
- Type in the message you want people to get when they sent you email, then click "Add New Rule". The page will reload, and then you need to click the "Add New Rule" button again. This time you should be back in the Filters list, where you should see a message that says "Successfully added new rule."
- When you return from vacation, go back to the Filters page, edit the vacation rule, and then click the "Disable this rule" box at the bottom of the page. This way when you next want to enable vacation mode, you don't need to recreate the rule. Just uncheck the Disable box, and edit the outgoing message as appropriate.
- Here is a screen shot of a completed vacation filter.
How do I import addresses in the the Webmail address book?
- Click the Addresses link at the top of the page.
- Click the 'Browse' button under Address book import to select a text file.
- Specify how the fields in the file are delimited.
The Address Book has 5 fields in each record, in the order you see listed.
Is Webmail secure?
Absolutely! You will notice that by default we use a secure connection (https)
to the webmail server. This means that anything you type (such as your password
to login) in encrypted before sending over the net.
How do I change my password?
- Click the Options link at the top of the page.
- Click the Change Password link.
What's up with the folders called 'Learn Spam' and 'Learn Ham' ?
These folders are not currently operational. Eventually, you can move spam that wasn't tagged as such into these folders to "train" the system to recognize them as spam
Learn Ham (Ham is not spam, i.e. legitimate email) does the same thing in reverse.
How can I change the return address of my outgoing mail?
- Click the Options link at the top of the page.
- Click the Personal Information link.
- Fill in the fields for your primary identity, and save the changes.
- Click the Edit Advanced Identities link to create additional identities. When you compose a message, you can then select which identity you are sending from.
How can I automatically filter spam into a separate folder?
- Click the Filters link at the top of the page.
- Click the "Add a New Rule" button.
- Click in the 2nd column pull down menu in the first condition.
It says "To: or Cc"- change this to "X-Spam-Status".
- In the empty field on the right. type "Yes".
The rule should read "Header : X-Spam-Status : contains : Yes"
- Below, in the Action section, click the "Move message into" button. You can then select an existing folder to filter the spam into. All accounts have a "spam" folder already setup by default. We recommend using this, but you can select any other folder if you prefer. Finally at the bottom, in the "Additional Actions" check the STOP checkbox. This way if you have a vacation message setup you won't send a vacation message to some bogus spammer email.
- Here is a screen shot of a completed spam filter.
Please note that if you are checking your email from a POP mail client, only those messages in the INBOX will be downloaded, so the spam that gets filtered out will not be downloaded to your email client (but can be viewed with webmail.)
How can I simply delete any mail tagged as spam?
- Click the Filters link at the top of the page.
- Click the "Add a New Rule" button.
- Click in the 2nd column pull down menu in the first condition.
It says "To: or Cc"- change this to "X-Spam-Status".
- In the empty field on the right. type "Yes".
The rule should read "Header : X-Spam-Status : contains : "Yes"
- Below, in the Action section, click the "Discard silently" button, then the Apply Changes button at the bottom.
How can I disable the spam filters?
- Click the Options link at the top of the page.
- Click the Spam Filters link.
- Set the Spam Score to 999.
- Click the Save Settings button.
How can I prevent certian addresses from being tagged as spam?
This is what is known as "whitelisting" an address, and is setup in the SpamAssassin preferences area.
- Click the Options link at the top of the page.
- Click the Spam Filters link.
- Enter the address of the email you want excluded from the spam filters in the Address field. You can specify an entire domain if you wish.
- Click the Save Settings button.
- Make sure "Type:" is set to "Whitelist From". Note you can also blacklist (always tag as spam) addresses here as well.
- Click the "Add New Address" button and you will see the address added to the Personal Allow / Deny Address list.
